Whether your cat is a purebred LaPerm, or a LaPerm mix, learning about this breed can explain a lot about your pet’s personality, habits and overall health.
This cat breed is known for being active, outgoing and curious, Dr. Aliya McCullough, Fetch’s on-staff veterinarian, says. So if you live in a busy household with other cats and dogs, this cat may be the perfect addition to your family.
“They're also known to be gentle and affectionate,” Dr. McCullough says. “LaPerm cats generally do fine with other cats and cat-friendly dogs.”
LaPerm cats have an inquisitive and playful nature, which means they should have lots of activities to keep them busy.
“Pet parents should be prepared to keep their LaPerm cats engaged with a variety of toys and games,” Dr. McCullough says.
Dr. McCullough says that LaPerms aren’t known for being vocal. So if you live in an apartment or enjoy quiet time — a LaPerm may be an excellent match for your lifestyle.
This cat breed typically weighs between 8 to 10 pounds and is around 6 to 10 inches tall. It can take between 2 to 3 years for LaPerms to fully mature — Dr. McCullough recommends asking a veterinarian about a diet plan that’s right for your growing cat.
Dr. McCullough explains that LaPerms generally have soft curly or wavy fur, and it’s usually medium in length. Weekly brushing is the best way to take care of a LaPerms’ fur, she adds. This cat breed sheds less than other cats, but they may molt — which is basically “large-scale shedding,” where an old coat falls out, and new fur grows during the shift between winter to spring.
While this cat breed sheds less than other cats, Dr. McCullough shares that it doesn’t mean they’re hypoallergenic.
“There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog or cat,” she says. “LaPerm cats don’t shed as much as other breeds, but allergy sufferers can still have a reaction to their fur, dander and saliva.” So if you have allergies, make sure you talk to your doctor about ways to manage this condition before welcoming a new cat into your family.

According to Dr. McCullough, LaPerms aren’t susceptible to specific conditions because of their breed.

Once your new best friend is home, Dr. McCullough has some tips for getting them adjusted. First, start slowly if you’re introducing the LaPerm to other cats. Start by letting both animals observe each other from a safe distance. Set up multiple litter boxes (one plus the number of cats in your family) so each cat has their own space in quiet areas and cat-proof your home. It’s a good idea to follow your vet-recommended diet plan for the first couple of weeks while your pet adjusts to their new environment.
