How to celebrate National Puppy Day

National Puppy Day, celebrated every year on March 23, is a day dedicated to honoring the joy our small furry friends bring us  — while also shining a light on the thousands of puppies in shelters waiting for their forever homes. Whether you're a longtime pet parent or thinking about welcoming a new pup into your family, here's what this day is all about and why it matters.

What is National Puppy Day?

National Puppy Day was founded in 2006 by Colleen Paige, a pet and home lifestyle expert, animal behaviorist and author. She launched National Puppy Day with a clear mission: to celebrate the unconditional love puppies offer, encourage adoption from shelters and rescues and raise awareness about the harsh realities of puppy mills.

At its heart, the day is about more than cute photos (though there are plenty of those). It's a call to action for pet parents and animal lovers everywhere to think about where puppies come from and how we can do better for the ones who need us most.

Why adoption matters more than ever

One of the biggest goals of National Puppy Day is to encourage pet parents to adopt from a rescue or shelter instead of buying a dog that could potentially be sourced from a puppy mill. Puppy mills are large-scale commercial breeding operations that often prioritize profit over the health and well-being of the animals. According to Humane World for Animals, an estimated 10,000 of these facilities exist across the United States, and the puppies born in them frequently face overcrowded, unsanitary conditions.

Meanwhile, shelters across the country are full of puppies and dogs who need loving homes. Roughly 5.8 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescues in 2024. The good news? If just 6% more households chose to adopt from a shelter instead of buying a pet, the U.S. could reach no-kill status nationwide. Every adoption truly makes a difference.

How to celebrate National Puppy Day

There's no shortage of ways to honor this day, whether or not you have a puppy of your own. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Adopt or foster a puppy. Many shelters and rescue organizations hold special adoption events around March 23, sometimes with reduced or waived fees. If you're not ready for a full-time commitment, fostering is a wonderful way to help.
  • Donate to a local shelter. Supplies like food, blankets, toys and cleaning products are always in demand. Even a small contribution goes a long way.
  • Spread the word on social media. Share photos of your pup, highlight adoptable dogs in your area or post about the importance of choosing adoption. National Puppy Day tends to trend online, so your post could reach more people than you think.
  • Spoil your own pup. Treat your furry friend to a new toy, an extra-long walk or their favorite snack. They deserve it.

Whether you celebrate by adopting, donating, volunteering or simply giving your own pup an extra belly rub, every little bit helps.
