At the milestone 150th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Penny, a 4-year-old Doberman Pinscher, claimed the coveted Best in Show title, defeating more than 2,500 dogs to earn the prestigious purple and gold ribbon. Here’s everything you need to know about Penny’s victory and what made this year’s event so special.
Before claiming the ultimate prize, Penny first had to win the Working Group competition, where she competed against other powerful breeds like Mastiffs, Rottweilers and Siberian Huskies. Her commanding presence and flawless movement caught the judges' attention, earning her a spot in the final Best in Show competition.
In the Best in Show ring, Penny faced 6 other group winners — each representing the finest examples of their respective breed groups. Judge David Fitzpatrick, himself a two-time Westminster Best in Show winner, had the challenging task of selecting the ultimate champion from this exceptional lineup. His expertise and understanding of what makes a truly outstanding show dog guided his decision to award Penny the top honor.
Winning at Westminster requires more than just good looks. Dogs are judged on how closely they match their breed standard — a detailed description of the ideal characteristics for each breed. This includes everything from body structure and movement to temperament and coat quality. Penny exemplified the Doberman standard with her sleek, powerful build, alert expression and confident demeanor.
This victory also marked a significant "passing of the leash" within the Working Group. Penny took the Best in Show title from Monty the Giant Schnauzer, who made history in 2025 as the first of his breed to reach the top spot.
Helping Penny shine was veteran handler Andy Linton, who is no stranger to the winner’s circle. In fact, the last time a Doberman took home Best in Show was in 1989, when Linton handled the winning pooch, Indy. Thirty-seven years later, his deep understanding of the breed helped Penny stand out in this spirited competition.

While there's no cash prize for winning Westminster, the prestige and recognition are priceless. The Best in Show winner receives the iconic purple and gold ribbon, a sterling silver trophy and a place in dog show history.
Penny’s victory lap includes a morning media tour and a celebratory lunch at Peak with Priceless at Edge NYC. Beyond the spotlight, this win puts the breed's heritage center stage, opening doors for brand partnerships and sparking a new wave of fans for the Doberman Pinscher.
Penny's win at this landmark event ensures her place not just as another Westminster winner, but as the champion of one of the most significant shows in the event's long history.
